The Best Place to Swim with Sea Turtles in Puerto Rico

Luis Peña Channel Marine Reserve, off the coast of Culebra, is home to the highest concentration of sea turtles in Puerto Rico. Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles glide through the crystal-clear water of this protected reserve — often just a few feet below the surface.

Getting there by private boat from Fajardo takes about 90 minutes — and the journey itself is part of the experience. Your captain anchors directly in the reserve, and you slip into the water wearing your snorkeling gear for an up-close encounter with these ancient creatures.

No crowds. No sharing the boat with strangers. No fixed group tours. Just your group, your captain, and one of the most memorable wildlife experiences in the Caribbean.

Best Places to Swim with Sea Turtles in Puerto Rico

We visit the top-rated sea turtle encounters in Puerto Rico's waters — all in the same private boat trip.

Luis Peña Channel sea turtle snorkeling Puerto Rico
🏆 Best Spot · Marine Reserve
Luis Peña Channel, Culebra

A federally protected marine reserve with no commercial fishing and minimal boat traffic. This is the most reliably successful spot for sea turtle encounters in Puerto Rico. Green sea turtles are often seen feeding on sea grass in the shallows, making snorkeling easy even for beginners. The reserve also has excellent elkhorn coral and tropical fish.

Tamarindo Beach sea turtle nesting Culebra Puerto Rico
🐢 Nesting Site · Full Day Only
Tamarindo Beach, Culebra

One of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the Caribbean. Leatherback, hawksbill, and green sea turtles all nest here. The beach itself is stunning and remote. We can include a stop at Tamarindo on full-day trips — it's a longer stretch from the main anchorage but absolutely worth it for serious wildlife enthusiasts.

Culebrita natural jacuzzi and sea turtle snorkeling
🌊 Hidden Gem · Full Day
Culebrita Island

A tiny uninhabited island off the northeast tip of Culebra with tide pools known as the "natural jacuzzi" and excellent sea turtle snorkeling along its south shore. Culebrita is reachable on full-day trips and offers some of the most secluded and pristine snorkeling in Puerto Rico, with a good chance of spotting hawksbill sea turtles near the coral formations.

Cayo Icacos sea turtle snorkeling Puerto Rico
🐢 Closest to Fajardo
Cayo Icacos

Just 15 minutes from Marina Puerto del Rey, Cayo Icacos has a reef flat where green sea turtles are frequently spotted year-round. The water is calm and shallow — ideal for families with young children or less confident swimmers. While turtle sightings are less guaranteed here than at Luis Peña, the proximity makes Icacos a great option for half-day trips or when weather limits travel to Culebra.

Why Private?

Private Turtle Tour vs. Group Tour

Many operators in Culebra offer shared snorkeling tours — but here's why private is better for sea turtle encounters:

  • 🐢Quieter water = more turtle sightings. Large group boats with 30+ people scare wildlife. Your private group of 2–20 creates far less disturbance.
  • ⏱️You set the pace. Spot a turtle and want to watch for 30 minutes? On a shared tour you'd be rushed to the next stop. Your captain waits for you.
  • 📸Better photos. No strangers photobombing, no queue at the ladder, no rush to get back on board. Take the time to get the shot.
  • 🗺️Custom route. The captain can add Culebrita, Tamarindo, or any other spot your group wants to visit — not possible on shared tours with fixed itineraries.
