Vieques is the largest island east of the Puerto Rican mainland — about 21 miles long and completely unlike anywhere else in PR. Until 2003, most of Vieques was a US Navy bombing range. When the Navy left, the unused land became a national wildlife refuge, which means today Vieques has some of the most pristine and least-developed beaches in the entire Caribbean.
The most famous spots are Playa Caracas (Red Beach) and Playa La Chiva (Blue Beach) — long strips of empty white sand with water so clear it looks photoshopped. Wild horses roam freely on the island, adding to the surreal "time stopped here" atmosphere. Snorkeling along the rocky points is excellent — coral and reef fish everywhere.
