See Your Options ↓Fajardo, on Puerto Rico's northeast coast, is home to Marina Puerto del Rey — the largest marina in the Caribbean — and is the closest point on the mainland to Icacos, Palomino, Culebra, Culebrita and Vieques. If a boat trip, a ferry, or an island day is part of your Puerto Rico plans, chances are it starts in Fajardo.
From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Fajardo is about 32 miles away, with a typical driving time of around 41 minutes depending on traffic.
The most flexible and common option for visitors. Rental counters are available at SJU airport, and the drive to Fajardo is straightforward. Some visitors choose a one-way rental to save on cost if they're not returning to San Juan.
A private car or driver service offers more privacy and a quicker, door-to-door trip from the airport or your hotel straight to Fajardo, without navigating unfamiliar roads yourself.
Públicos are shared 12- to 15-passenger vans that operate as informal inter-city public transportation between San Juan and Fajardo. They're an affordable option, though schedules can be informal and vans typically depart once full.
Taxis are available in San Juan with flat rates within certain zones; trips outside those zones, including to Fajardo, generally use the meter, though some drivers may offer a flat rate for the trip.
Most visitors headed for a boat charter or a ferry to Vieques or Culebra will end up at or near Marina Puerto del Rey in Fajardo. Whichever transportation option you choose, let your driver or rental GPS know your destination is Marina Puerto del Rey, and plan to arrive with a little buffer time before your scheduled charter or ferry departure.
