Puerto Rico's Best Coral Reefs

🐠
Carlos Rosario — Culebra ⭐
Widely considered the best snorkel reef in Puerto Rico. Healthy hard and soft coral structures, abundant fish life, eagle rays, nurse sharks, and green sea turtles. Only accessible by private boat. The ferry to Culebra docks miles away — Carlos Rosario stays pristine because most people can't reach it. Visibility: 20-25m.
🐢
Icacos Island Reef
30 minutes from Fajardo. Seagrass beds around the island are prime sea turtle feeding grounds — encounters are very frequent. Reef fish, conch, nurse sharks under ledges. Water clarity: 60+ feet. Ideal for beginners and families because the water is extremely calm. One of the best turtle-watching snorkel spots in the Caribbean.
🌊
Culebrita Tidal Pools
Natural tidal pools at Culebrita Island create unique reef ecosystems warm from the sun. Juvenile fish, coral formations, sea urchins, and colorful invertebrates. Warm pool snorkeling unlike anything else in Puerto Rico — a completely different experience from open-water reef diving.
🦅
Media Luna — Vieques
Reef system off the south coast of Vieques within the National Wildlife Refuge. Eagle ray sightings are common. Diverse coral species including staghorn and brain coral. Less crowded than Culebra reefs. Best on a Vieques day trip or overnight charter.

FAQ

Coral Reef Snorkeling FAQ

Is Puerto Rico good for coral reef snorkeling?
Excellent — especially the protected areas around Culebra, Vieques, and La Cordillera. These reefs have seen lower tourist pressure and active protection, resulting in healthier ecosystems than most Caribbean resort areas. Carlos Rosario in Culebra is consistently ranked among the top snorkel reefs in the Caribbean.
Do I need to bring snorkel gear?
No. Snorkel gear (mask, snorkel, fins) is included in all charters for every guest. Gear is cleaned and inspected before each charter. Life jackets for non-swimmers who want to snorkel are also on board.
What time of year is best for reef snorkeling?
November through April — dry season, calmest seas, best water clarity. December through March is peak for visibility (60+ feet possible). Summer (June-August) water is warmer but visibility can be slightly lower from summer plankton blooms. All months are snorkeable — just adjust expectations.
Are the reefs at Culebra better than at Icacos?
Different experiences. Carlos Rosario (Culebra) has more diverse coral species, bigger fish, eagle rays, and nurse sharks — higher biodiversity. Icacos has exceptional turtle frequency and crystal clarity — often better for beginners and families. Culebra is worth the extra 90 minutes each way for serious snorkelers. Icacos is perfect for all skill levels close to Fajardo.
